Women’s Voices at Carolina

In honor of Women’s History Month, many female leaders across UNC-Chapel Hill have shared their thoughts and endeavors on holding positions that have not historically been held by women. From being the dean of a college department to being a Ph.D. candidate in a STEM field, women at Carolina have managed to leave their footprints in many areas of the University.

Janet Steele, assistant operations director in comparative medicine, acknowledged the importance of her existence in the professional world and how she celebrates other women in leadership to encourage us all to keep moving forward to equality, equity and diversity in the workforce at all levels.

Arian Vigil, professor and chair of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, described how her experience encompasses being proud of the work that UNC students and faculty are doing while constantly navigating the tension between a commitment to feminist values and principles and the reality of working within a large institution.

“Fixing the leaky pipeline will require significant policy reform and societal change,” said Irene Manning, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry. “But I don’t underestimate the impact of a network of women working to support one another.”
