Spreading Compassion at Carolina

“I don’t like to let people down.”

Allison Legge’s reaction to the bursting of the dot-com bubble in the 1990s says much about her character. At the time, she was a manager in IT, with over 15 years of high tech industry experience. She wasn’t in danger of being laid off. But she hated the thought of laying off members of her own team so much that she quit rather than do it another time.

At Carolina, Legge is well into her second career, celebrating almost 15 years in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. She is such a vital part of the office that Stephen Farmer, vice provost for enrollment and undergraduate admissions, said, “I often tell people that I measure my own time at Carolina in the years B.A. and A.A. — before Allison and after Allison.”
