For the good of the order: Carolina’s first endowed deanship

After more than 200 years, Carolina “firsts” seem to grow more and more rare. With the largest commitment received by the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), Carolina celebrates its first endowed deanship.

But Charles B. Lowry ’74 (M.S.L.S.) and Marcia Duncan Lowry weren’t thinking about “firsts” when they established the Duncan-Lowry Deanship at SILS. They were focused on creating strategic opportunities often missed because of lack of resources at universities. Charles was also inspired by his friend and mentor Edward Holley, a former SILS dean who advocated the philosophy of doing things “for the good of the order.”
