Pioneering the future

UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State were ahead of the curve in 2003 when they combined Carolina’s top-notch medical program with State’s world-class engineering school so graduate students could explore the growing field of biomedical engineering (BME).

That joint graduate program proved so successful that in 2015, the two schools launched a first-of-its-kind joint undergraduate degree program in which students apply through one campus but are considered part of both. The program has become a blueprint for other BME programs across the country.
