Serving Those Who Served

Less than 1 percent of Americans serve in the military, selflessly putting their lives in harm’s way to protect our country and our freedom. Yet when these highly trained, vitally important individuals return from serving, they often have difficulty finding employment. At UNC Medicine, we are doing our part to change this.

The UNC Physician Assistant Program, housed in the Department of Allied Health Sciences, provides Special Forces medics with educational and career-development opportunities to help transition their skills into careers as physicians’ assistants. Now they can transfer their existing talents to a different setting with the same goal of service to humankind. Once trained, the veterans are placed in rural areas with limited access to health-care services, improving the quality of care in rural communities.
