What’s in your water?

Alice Wang, PhD, has a career that most can only imagine or visualize in film and TV. Wang excitedly shared that actress Kate Winslet starred as an epidemic intelligence service officer in Contagion — demonstrating what she (Wang) does every day.

Shortly after Wang graduated from the Gillings School’s environmental sciences and engineering program in May of 2015, she began work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since then, Wang has travelled internationally to Tanzania, Dar es Salaam and Mwanza to help with cholera outbreak response. Most recently she traveled to Flint, Michigan for water response. “Responding to public health crises in our own country is very important, too,” she says. “A lot of what we do is common sense,” she explains, “but when limited by resources, hindered by politics and bogged down by logistics, the simplest tasks become challenges. Solving that puzzle is what makes public health fun.”

As a graduate, Wang says “UNC has supported me for many years and I love to give back!”. Currently, she supports the Library and her class of 2010 Senior Campaign.
