Women Who Are Changing the World

The Carolina Covenant Scholars program unlocked the door to a storytelling track for Spencer Bakalar ’13.

Now, Bakalar, a UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media graduate, currently works as a senior video producer at Time magazine. In Time’s special report, “First: Women Who Are Changing the World,” Bakalar goes to the heart of women leaders’ stories through a series of short documentaries, which she co-directed and edited.

“Humility, mindfulness, resolve and kindness — these are the words that describe the Spencer Bakalar I knew as a student, and as I’ve seen Spencer’s work at TIME, I can tell that her spirit and skills have only grown stronger,” recalled Chad Heartwood, an associate professor at Carolina. “She was a leader in the classroom here at Carolina. She led through action and example. She’s the kind of person and storyteller you want to work with. She will get the job done and she will do it with heart.”
