An anonymous donor has made a transformational $9 million gift to the Carolina Baseball Operating Endowment through The Rams Club. As part of the gift, the donor has challenged fans and supporters to match the generous investment and grow the endowment to $25 million. To date, $2.2 million has been pledged toward meeting the challenge.
“We are incredibly humbled and grateful for this incredible gift, which will provide vital resources to enhance the training, development, nutrition, technology and operational aspects of our program,” said Carolina baseball head coach Scott Forbes. “This investment will provide our players the resources necessary to maximize their potential and for our program to remain nationally competitive. With your support, we will reach the full match and continue positioning our program for sustained success.”
Each of Carolina’s 28 sports has its own operating endowment. The annual yield from these endowments is made available to each head coach to help meet specific needs that are not covered in the regular operating budget. The Carolina Baseball Operating Endowment provides a permanent revenue stream, ensuring the program will be funded at levels necessary to remain competitive.
“This gift is an outstanding investment in the future of our baseball program, and we appreciate the generosity and creativity of the donors who want to support the championship success of the Diamond Heels,” said Bubba Cunningham, Carolina’s athletic director. “These funds will make a great impact on the experience of Tar Heel student-athletes, and we are hopeful that this extraordinary gift will inspire others.”
Generosity like this has helped build Carolina baseball into one of the nation’s most successful programs. Twelve College World Series appearances, 27 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, 68 All-Americans and 26 Major League Baseball Draft first-round picks are the result of tireless work from players and coaches alongside community support.
