“I was honored to be the first African American student body secretary at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I enjoyed working with then-Student Body President Ford Runge, and that introduction to working in government was a step toward my career in government and working on campaigns.

Before retiring, I worked for the City of Charlotte and served as a JAG in the U.S. Air Force. I served as an officer of my local American Legion Post 43, and I have helped on campaigns at the state and local levels for many years.

At Carolina, I was a charter member of the Theta Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a North Carolina Fellow, a member of the fencing team, an Institute of Government intern and a member of the Order of the Valkyries.

Had someone not made a private donation to UNC-Chapel Hill, I may not have earned the education I did when I began at Carolina in 1972.”
