Breathing a sigh of relief

“People with severe asthma have trouble breathing almost all of the time and experience frequent, debilitating attacks. It’s not only frightening; it can be deadly.”

Gillings School of Global Public Health associate professor Anastasia Ivanova’s son has a light form of asthma. She can only imagine what people with severe asthma go through.

Two areas of expertise at Carolina — precision medicine and “big data” analysis — hold the promise of more effective treatment for severe asthma, which affects nearly 10 percent of people worldwide. Working with colleague David Couper and the UNC School of Medicine, Ivanova aims to bring a personalized medicine approach to identify new therapies for severe asthma.
