Hoops for Relief

Over the course of a four-minute, 15-second shooting drill during the 2018 edition of Late Night with Roy — Carolina’s celebration of the start of college basketball season — the Tar Heel men’s basketball team made 117 baskets.

Each of those baskets meant the University would provide $100 toward Hurricane Florence relief. At the end of Late Night — including $11,700 raised from the sale of autographed basketballs — the University, Carolina men’s basketball and coach Roy Williams donated $23,400 total to the cause.

“This is a shooting drill we do many times during the year, but it’s never had the impact on people’s lives like it has tonight,” said Roy Williams. “I had a chance to see the devastation on the coast in person and it was heartbreaking. This is a small way our players, staff, Wanda and I could help bring some relief to so many who are hurting. Even though it has been several weeks since the storm, I encourage everyone to please continue to remember those in need.”
