Katrina’s legacy: understanding the science of water

Professor Rick Luettich, director of the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences, and his team worked with the Army Corps of Engineers to redesign the hurricane protection system in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. His work focuses on developing computer models to predict the behavior of the coastal ocean during a big storm and improve preparedness and responsiveness.
