More than Xs and Os

“To be the first student-athlete from [Carolina or Duke] to [be a Robertson Scholar] is very special and I want to represent my fellow athletes well and encourage others to join me.” —Loren Shealy ’15, USWNT member

In 2012 Shealy was selected as a Robertson Scholar— a title no other UNC or Duke athlete to date has ever held. The Robertson Scholarship program is a joint undergraduate scholarship program between UNC and Duke. It was created in 2000 with a gift from UNC alumnus and businessman Julian H. Robertson and his wife Josie to foster collaboration and inter-collegiate scholarship between the schools their sons attended.
Shealy earned national accolades for both her athletic and academic success. As an athlete, she was selected for the ACC All-Tournament Team and the All-ACC Academic Team. She was named Sports Illustrated’s first ever “Female College Athlete of the Year” and the ACC’s Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2013.

With a perfect grade point average (GPA), Shealy twice earned the NCAA Elite 89 award, which recognizes players with the top GPA at each sport’s NCAA championship finals. She also earned two consecutive ACC titles during her Carolina career, and her team reached the NCAA finals three years in a row.
