Partnering Against Oppression

Individuals facing legal processes as well as potential legal consequences need more than just legal representation. That’s what UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Law has discovered through a partnership with the School of Social Work. By pairing law students with social work students, both departments have been able to aid clients through a more holistic approach.

Through the Youth Justice Clinic, law and social work students work together to not only ensure clients are well represented in court but that they also have access to various resources. Helping clients from this multidisciplinary angle has the potential to build a stronger lawyer-client relationship while aiding communities and families that are negatively impacted by these systems and institutions.

Meagan Watson, a Carolina Law student, and Hannah Camp, a dual degree student in the UNC School of Social Work and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, have both had the opportunity to work together through the program.

“Working with Hannah changed my approach to client representation,” said Watson “I now have a more holistic perspective of representation (beyond building strong legal arguments) and this has increased my effectiveness as a client advocate.”
