A Morehead-Cain Scholar, Donald Fejfar ’21 has a wide variety of interests, spanning biostatistics, food security and even water polo.

Specifically, though, Fejfar is studying how disease relates to food and water quality, security and accessibility on Isabela Island in Galapagos, Ecuador. These studies are made possible through the UNC Center for Galapagos Studies and the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

“Knowing what I wanted to study was actually just an accumulation of things over time,” said Fejfar. “I cared about health and studying it in understudied or underrepresented places and people. When I got to college and figured out what the world of academics and research look like, I realized I didn’t just want to practice medicine, but pursue more population-based work as well.”
