Roy Williams looks back at 2004 Olympics

“The opening ceremonies were off the charts, even though we were wearing what is—in my opinion—the least appealing opening ceremony uniforms the United States has ever had.”

Opening ceremony uniforms aside, the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, were a memorable experience for UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams. He helped the U.S. basketball squad—coached by Larry Brown ’63—to a bronze medal. He cheered on U.S. gymnast Paul Hamm as he took gold. And he drew inspiration from the athleticism and focus of runners competing in the 100-meter dash.
