‘We can learn so much from them’

“Many people are convinced that these men have no value. They are sentenced to die in prison and so they must be worthless, but they are not. They are human beings who have continued to grow, learn and reflect on their lives. We can learn so much from them. People sometimes do terrible things but forgiveness and love should be our guiding lights. Every time I leave a session I am renewed, because if these men can change perhaps so can the rest of us.”

UNC dramatic art lecturer Kathryn Hunter-Williams and her colleague Lynden Harris created Serving Life, which explores race, class, compassion and justice with men on death row and those sentenced as children to life without parole.
