From Taiwan to Chapel Hill: Overcoming cultural challenges

“I thought I knew English well until I was confronted with the Southern drawl!”

Language was just one challenge Chen-Yu Yen ’83 Ph.D. and his wife, Ray-Whay, faced when they arrived from Taiwan in the 1970s. A move like that has many obstacles and, sometimes, not a lot of support. But with financial assistance and the generosity of others, the Yens made it. Now they’re repaying that generosity. To help young international students at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health succeed and to provide opportunities similar to ones they received, they created the Chen-Yu and Ray-Whay Yen Expendable Graduate Fellowship.
