A Dog in the Dugout

For junior outfielder Brian Miller, REMINGTON is a member of the Carolina baseball team. Nevermind REMINGTON has four legs.

“This is the first time I’ve ever had a dog or any sort of assistance dog helping out with any team I’ve been a part of,” says Miller. “It’s like a bond that I have with any of my teammates really.”

REMINGTON, a 2-year-old golden retriever, is Carolina’s and the ACC’s first athletics training room assistance dog. His official title—psychiatric medical alert facility rehabilitation service dog—means he works with Terri Jo Rucinski, coordinator of the physical therapy clinic and staff athletic trainer for the team, to help players recover from their injuries. Rucinski said student athletes who have undergone surgeries turn the corner emotionally more quickly with REMINGTON around.
