Preserving our cultural heritage

May 2016 Update: With two grants totaling $45,000 from the GRAMMY Foundation and the National Recording Preservation Foundation, the Southern Folklife Collection will not only preserve rare musical recordings from the Mike Seeger and McCabe’s Guitar Shop collections, but will also make them available online, streamable for the first time.

“These sounds are a national treasure,” said Steve Weiss, curator of the UNC Southern Folklife Collection (SFC). “We cannot wait to bring them to fresh generations of listeners, researchers, students and fans.”

Thanks to a gift from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Southern Folklife Collection and UNC Libraries can make digital copies of some of its precious holdings. This means people all over the world will be able to access the many gems among the Collection’s 250,000 sound recordings, 3,000 video holdings, and 6 million feet of film, including the first recordings of “We Shall Overcome” and Dolly Parton singing “Puppy Love,” when she was 13 years old.
